Studies continually show that states that have abortion bans have <a href=\"https:\/\/sph.tulane.edu\/study-finds-higher-maternal-mortality-rates-states-more-abortion-restrictions\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/sph.tulane.edu\/study-finds-higher-maternal-mortality-rates-states-more-abortion-restrictions\">higher rates of maternal mortality<\/a> and Iowa is no exception. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">A study by the March of Dimes found that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iowapublicradio.org\/health\/2023-08-01\/report-finds-a-third-of-iowa-counties-are-maternity-care-deserts\">one-third of Iowa counties are maternal care deserts<\/a>, which means they have no maternity wards, no OB\/GYNs, and no birthing centers.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Sixty-one percent of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iowapublicradio.org\/health\/2024-02-23\/report-finds-more-than-half-of-rural-iowa-hospitals-no-longer-deliver-babies\">rural Iowa hospitals have no labor and delivery services.\u00a0<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dailyiowan.com\/2022\/11\/09\/iowa-has-the-fewest-ob-gyn-specialists-per-capita-nationwide-regent-report-reveals\/\">Iowa has the fewest OB-GYNS per capita out of any state in the nation.<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/best-states\/articles\/2018-05-11\/iowa-abortion-law-may-exacerbate-states-ob-gyn-shortage\">41.4 percent of Iowa women live in counties where they cannot access reproductive care services and live with<\/a> \u201cvery high or high vulnerability\u201d to adverse outcomes such as unexpected pregnancy, preterm birth, anxiety, and depression.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/local\/des-moines\/2023\/07\/31\/iowa-maternal-death-rate-birthing-units-study\">Iowa\u2019s maternal mortality rate is rising.<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iowapublicradio.org\/health\/2022-05-19\/black-iowans-face-a-startlingly-high-maternal-mortality-rate-and-its-a-systemic-problem\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.iowapublicradio.org\/health\/2022-05-19\/black-iowans-face-a-startlingly-high-maternal-mortality-rate-and-its-a-systemic-problem\">Maternal mortality for Black Iowans is one of the highest in the nation.<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">And <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/abortion-texas-infant-mortality-birth-defects-b055ac35cdbc9ec13f400b4c3e1056e7\">a recent study out of Texas shows that abortion restrictions increase infant mortality.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Iowa&#8217;s abortion ban is having a devastating impact on healthcare access for all people in the state.
